The first person to receive the first reward was John F. Kennedy. There were 21 recipients today Barack Obama said. The posthumous award is arising or continuing after ones death. It is given to people that had bravery.
The two Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients are Ellen DeGeneres and Grace Hopper. Ellen was an award comedian who hosted her own TV show. She hosted the Academy Awards twice. Once in 2007 and once in 2014. Grace was known as the Amazing Grace. She was the first lady of software.. Because she was a computer programmer.

The first medal was given in 1963 with President John F. Kennedy. I went to the Whitehouse.gov and the first person on the list was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
I couldn't find how much but Obama gave out 22 people that night. A post humus award is an award given out to people who have contributed to the nation but have passed away. Admiral Grace Hopper received the award. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a NBA basketball player who was on the Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks. He was a 6 time MVP and a 19 time NBA All-Star. Ellen DeGeneres was a comedian who hosted her popular show, the Ellen DeGeneres show. She also hosted the Academy Awards and won an award for her TV show

My first awardee is Neil Armstrong. Neil traveled to the moon and back, literally. He was a very bold man. He wanted to make the people around him proud, so he planted an American flag on top of the moon.
My next awardee or awardees are the Cleveland cavaliers. These professionals are the best in the game at basketball. Obama himself is a huge cavaliers fan. The cavaliers are very active, but they touch people mentally.

The award was presented at the White House on November 22nd, 2016 to 21 artists, sports figures, scientists and philanthropists.The award is not only given U.S. citizens but it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform. It was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.
2. The first Presidential Medal was given by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1963, after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy established the current decoration through Executive Order 11085, and it was the first U.S. civilian neck decoration and the only U.S. sash and star decoration.
People are selected by the president, either on his own or based on recommendations. The medal may be awarded more than once to anyone who has received it.
3. Marian Anderson was awarded the first Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. She is one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century and helped destroy racial barriers in the arts.
Marian Anderson was an important figure for other African American artists who struggled with racism during that time. She will be remembered as an,"Artist and citizen, who has ennobled her race and her country while her voice has enthralled the world", as said by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
4. Five Hundred Eighty-Three Presidential Medal of Freedom have been awarded since its' inception in 1963. President Obama has awarded the most awards(113), while President Nixon awarded the least(27).
President Clinton and Reagan are the second highest for the most awards given(86), while President Ford is the second to least for the most awards given(28).President Johnson has 57, President Carter has 34, President Kennedy has 31, President George H.W. Bush has 37, and President George W. Bush has 81.
5. A post humus award is an award given to someone who has died. Out of 21 people who received the award from President Obama, two were post humus. The two people who received the post humus award is Grace Hopper and Elouise Cobell.
Grace Hopper was an American computer scientist and United States Navy Rear Admiral.Elouise Cobell was a tribal elder and activist, banker, and rancher.
6. One person I choose is Michael Jordan. I chose Michael Jordan because he is one of the greatest Basketball players/ greatest athlete of all time.During his career, he won six championships, five Most Valuable Player awards, and appeared in 14 All-Star games, as well as he is involved with a variety of charities including the Boys' and Girls' Clubs of America,and a number of other charitable organizations that support children and families. He received this highest honor from the President because of his achievements in his Basketball career and all the charitable work he has done, as well as given back to the people.
I also chose Tom Hanks because he is one of the nations greatest actor/filmmaker.He has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role five times, and received the award for his work in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. His role in many movies has left a mark on American film, and besides acting he also supports social and environmental justice, and for our veterans and their families. He received this highest honor from the President because not only is he a great actor/filmmaker, but he supports veterans and justice for the people and the environment, as well as give back.
This is Aidan, this is my response. The Medal of Honor is the highest civilian honor that recongizes expectional meritorious service. The first medal was given to John Steinbeck on September 14, 1964. There have been 581 medals given out. A post humus award given to someone after they die. The two presidential Medal of Honor recipients are Kareem Abull-Jabbar and Micheal Jordan. Kareem's acheviements are he has earned 6 NBA championships in his career. Michael Jordan has as well received 6 NBA championships. President Barack Obama chose Michael Jordan because in a specific career if they call you the "Michael Jordan" of something, it means you're good at it. President Obama chose Kareem Abull-Jabbar because he was in college playing basketball, the NCAA made a rule where you can't dunk the ball and he still speaks successful.

He played basketball with his brother larry. He wanted to be taller because his team would lose to larrys team. He asked his grandma and she said putting salt in his shoes was going to make him taller. Every night his grandma would sprinkle salt in his favorite shoes. It took months. When he was older he would beat his older brother larry in a basketball game. The reason why Barak obama given these two former baketball players this honor because he thought they dominated basketball. When abdul played in college it was a rule you couldn't dunk the ball. Abdul played for the los angeles lakers. jordan played for the chicago bulls.
ReplyDeleteWorld War 2 started in the year 1939 to 1945. One of the causes of World War 2 was in the 1930s when Germany had been ruled by Adolf Hitler along with the Nazi party. That time Adolf Hitler wanted to make Germany the most powerful and strongest country in Europe. Hitler had formed an army force to expand the Germany borders and along with that he did not like Jewish people and killed them. He took Jewish people to concentration camps and made healthy adults work and starve. So that also caused the war because Hitler wanted to make Germany a non-Jewish country.
ReplyDeleteThey took Jewish people to a concentration camp to work hard and to be killed. The Dachau concentration camp was established in the year 1933 and was located on abandoned munitions factory near the northeastern part of Dachau. The Night of Broken Glass also known as Kristallnacht was on November 9, 1938 and was a huge or massive planned attack on the Jewish in German Reich. So this event came known as the Night of Broken Glass. It is important to preserve history because we need to maintain which means preserve history. Or to keep it the way it island not to change anything.
Benzion Peresetski was one of the survivors of the Dachau concentration camps. He is a Jewish man from Lithuania, he worn the blue and gray striped outfit for 10 months in the concentration camp. He had hid the outfit in the back of his closet for 33 years later. His story included immigration to the United States, his legal pursuits, history photos, maps, etc. We can learn from the terrible events from World War 2 that we should not treat other religion cultures mean and like they are not human. Like how Hitler and the Nazi treated the Jewish people mean because they killed millions of them at the concentration camp. They took Jewish, Roma travelers, gay people, and political prisoners to the concentration camps to do labor and to be killed.
Along with that they would force Jewish people out of their homes in the middle of the night. The Jewish would only be able to take one suitcase and sometimes they couldn’t at all. After they forced them out the Nazi soldiers would steal all the stuff that the Jewish people left behind in their house. The Nazi soldiers would then send them to a 2 block place where a lot of Jewish people were forced to live their called the ghettos. The ghettos were set up to block the Jewish from the rest of the world population. They would live there before they went to the concentration camp. So we should not treat people of different religion mean and act like they are not human and treat them like animals like the Nazi party and Hitler did to them.

About 144 of Presidential Medal of Freedom was given until its inception. A post humus award is an award for people in the past who died but did very helpful thing to their country.
Two other people who got the Presidential Medal of Freedom is Margaret Hamilton and she helped invent and flight software for NASA. Another person is Richard Garwin and he did the risk of nuclear war through science.

Maya Angelou is my first pick. Her life has had its bumps in the road because of her race and for being a Black woman. He achievements were her being an inspiring author and an inspiring woman to young people. My second pick is Nelson Mandela. The first Presidential Medal of Freedom was given in 1945 by President Truman to people to recognize them for outstanding military service in war. They stopped giving the award out to people for a while until 1963 when President John F. Kennedy started giving the awards out again to recognize civilians for their contributions during peace time. Now, presidents give the award out to people who have influenced the world in different ways.

The first people to get this award in 1945 were Elaine Delhaye, Anna M. Rosenberg, Andree De Jongh and Marie Louise Dissard. There are some people who have been honored with this award posthumously, which means they were given the award after they died to recognize their achievements to society.
Two people who have received this award are Ellen DeGeneres and Tom Hanks. They were both honored on November 22, 2016 by President Obama. Ellen DeGeneres is a comedian who has a talk show and was the voice of Dory in the movie "Finding Nemo." She’s also appeared in many TV shows. She showed bravery when she revealed that she was a lesbian. This was a very risky thing to do at the time. By doing this, she became a role model to many and gave people the strength to speak their mind. She also fights for equal rights. Tom Hanks is an actor who also appeared on TV shows and many movies. He’s won many awards for his work. He voiced the character Woody in the movie "Toy Story." Tom Hanks is also an advocate for social and environmental issues. He also fights for veterans’ rights and for their families. These people are good, brave and inspiring which is why they deserved to receive the Medal of Freedom.

I chose Stephen Hawking and President George Bush. Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8, 1942. He is a theoretical physicalist, cosmologist and also an author. George Bush was born in July 12, 1924 in Massachusetts and his achievements are that he signed an increase in taxes on a central promise of his campaign and signed the Americans with Disabilities act in 1990. They received the highest honor because Stephen has released 3 famous books while Bush worked with Clinton to aid those from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Indian Tsunami in 2004.

Dr. Maya Angelou was born April 4, 1928 and died on May 28, 2014. Some achievements she had was the Langston Hughes Medal, the Gracie Awards, and the Marian Anderson Award to name a few. Dr. Maya Angelou got this award because she's a writer, a civil rights activist, an actress, a director, a singer, and a dancer. She has helped the country form what it is today. Dave Thomas was born July 2, 1932 and died January 8, 2002. He is a business man, and a philanthropist. Some achievements Dave has gotten were the Kentucky Colonel and being the founder of his own business (Wendy's). He got the Presidential Medal of Freedom because heis an empowering business man, as he has a very large fast food chain. He also got the award because he helped out showing people about adoption, as he was adopted himself. He wanted kids to be out of foster himes and living with families who would adopt them.

A post humus award is something given to occur after somebody's death. Entertainer Ellen DeGeneres came out as lesbian about 20 year's ago at the time of being gay was less accepted. Michael Jordan have dominated basketball and Jordan was so ecceptional that people say the Michael Jordan of a given feild, like the Michael Jordan of brain doctors or the Michael Jordan of being a rabbi.

Ellen's achievements are having her own tv show and getting the metal of freedom. Diana's achievements are getting the metal of freedom and her becoming a singer. Diana's life is singing and song writing. Ellen's life is like entertaining , a host and actress. they got the medal of freedom because they both represented Barack Obama.

ReplyDeleteThe two recipients I chose are Isabel Allende and Jonas Salk. In 2014, Isabel Allende was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. Isabel Allende is an author. She was born in Lima, Peru on August 2, 1942. Isabel Allende escaped death during a violent coup in Chile and she wrote about her experiences. She was awarded the medal because her novels are inspiring to many people all over the world. She has won many awards including Author of the Year, Novel of the Year, Book of the Year, etc. In 1977, Jonas Salk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. Jonas Salk was a virologist. He was born in New York, NY on October 28, 1914. He was awarded the medal for his discovery of the vaccine for polio. Jonas Salk's discovery came after decades of deaths from polio and saved many lives.

I am going to talk about Michael Jordan and Neil Armstrong. Michael Jordan is a American retired national professional basketball player. Throughout his career he gained reputation for being one of the best defensive basketball players. He earned the NBA's Most Valuable Player Award five times. Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the moon. Before becoming an astronaut he was an officer in the U.S. Navy. They named a creator after Armstrong to honor him.

ReplyDeleteThe Presidential Medal of Freedom is a reward to thank the people for making the world a better place. The first Presidential Medal of Freedom was given to Grace Hopper for developing software. Another award was given in 1985 to James Stewart.
There were 21 Presidential Medal of Freedom awards given out. A "post humus" award is an award for being brave. Michael Jordan has played in the NBA for 15 seasons and has won 6 championships in the NBA. Michael has also appeared in 14 All-Star games. Maya Lin is known for making sculptures and landscape art. Maya designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.
